Russia Moves to Classify Cryptocurrency as Marital Property in Divorce Proceedings
Russia's parliament is reviewing draft legislation that would categorize cryptocurrency as joint marital property, subject to division during divorce. The bill, proposed by State Duma member Igor Antropenko, seeks to amend the Family Code to address digital assets acquired during marriage.
The initiative reflects growing crypto adoption among Russian households as both investment vehicles and savings instruments. Without clear legal frameworks, spouses could potentially conceal digital assets during marital dissolution—a loophole this legislation aims to close.
Notably, the proposal distinguishes between crypto obtained during marriage versus pre-marital holdings or inherited assets. Only marital-period acquisitions WOULD be considered community property under the revised statutes.
